This easternmost planning segment of the Pennsylvania Highlands Trail Network (PHTN) encompasses potions of Bucks, Lehigh and Northampton Counties and includes a variety of rural, suburban and urban landscapes. The PHTN begins at the Delaware River in the Borough of Riegelsville and co-aligns on the D&L Trail. Currently two routes are being explored including a Northern Route that follows the D&L Trail along the towpaths of the Delaware Canal and Lehigh Canal from Riegelsville to Bethlehem; and a Southern Route that follows the D&L Trail south from Riegelsville to the planned Ringing Rocks Trail. In 2018, a new trailhead opened up in Bridgeton Township on River Road that provides parking and access to the D&L Trail. In 2018, the Borough of Quakertown installed trail route signage that designated the Borough’s route through town. AMC is also exploring ways to link Quakertown Borough to Nockamixon State Park with a trail. Trails developed in Richland and Milford Townships provide several miles of trail, although gaps between the trails remain.
The PHTN will connect four of the seven PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources designated Conservation Landscapes, including: Lehigh Valley Greenways, Schuylkill Highlands, Susquehanna Riverlands, and South Mountain. Segment #1 contains portions of two of those Conservation Landscapes: Schuylkill Highlands and the Lehigh Valley Greenways.
